Hydromol Intensive: Intense therapy for clinically dry skin and eczema with an intensive hydrating action using a humectant to compliment complete emollient therapy. Hydromol Intensive contains urea for intense hydrating action Complete Emollient Therapy Explained: The skin's natural barrier The skin is a natural protective barrier which is made up of "bricks" joined together by "mortar". In healthy skin the bricks are full of water and fit tightly together with no gaps between them. The bricks themselves contain Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) which attracts and keeps in water. When the skin gets into trouble When the skin is dry, it is because there is not enough mortar between the bricks and there is a lack of NMF within them. Water is lost and the bricks become so dry that they shrink and crack, leaving gaps between them Skin under attack The gaps in the natural protective barrier (the bricks and mortar) leave the skin open to invasion by bacteria and allergens. Our body's own defence system starts to fight back and resist the invasion. It uses inflammatory cells and chemicals to do this, which produces inflammation causing redness, swelling, and itching of the skin. Itching makes you scratch, and scratching damages your skin even more. Complete emollient therapy Emollients smooth and soften the skin, they create a moisturising layer on the surface and replace some of the missing mortar. Water loss is reduced, the bricks swell, and the gaps reduce. Some creams also add NMF into the skin, helping the bricks to attract and hold water. Regular use of Emollients can reduce the redness, swelling, and itching. They can also help reduce the quantities of other required treatments e.g. topical steroids.
